"Geology is Hard"
That's my personal favorite geology quote. It's quite true, too. Geology is a lot more than just "looking at rocks". Geology tells the story of time. It tells us what the environments of the Earth looked like through time. It tells us what life has looked like through time and how it has evolved. It is our window into the past. But it's not easy and it is certainly more than just "looking at rocks".
Geology is a science, and like any science it is studied using the Scientific Method. Learning science in the classroom is great, but it is difficult to reinforce the scientific method without doing field work. These assignments are aimed at giving you some field experience without ever actually going out into the field! You are going to take on the role of the geologist that is exploring the LaSalle, IL region geology, the mineralogy of Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the structure of the Baraboo, Wisconsin region. You have already collected some data and your assignments will be to collect more data, make observations, make interpretations, construct stratigraphic columns, create a cross section, and describe some of the things you see in the field. Each assignment is located above. Click the buttons and begin your field work, young geologists! |
